NEFs do give you more leeway to correct things after the event; assuming you have Photoshop (or another application that can use the plug-in and supports 16-bit images) give them a try and see what you think. I use them all the time unless I need to take a really large number of shots.

Just make sure you've got plenty of storage. D100 NEFs are very large at about 9.7Mb - I only get 25 of them on a 256Mb CF card.

Compressed NEFs vary in size but are typically about half that. The problem is they can take as much as 45 seconds to write, so if you fill the 4 shot buffer you end up waiting for the camera.
