Since I made the suggestion about using "Less Contrast" perhaps I should qualify it by saying that I'm shooting NEFs and have found that this setting gives me results that are more easily corrected when necessary in Photoshop - but then NEFs aren't the point and shoot option.

Judging from Dave's results above you'd be better off using the Normal tone compensation curve for JPEGs unless you have a high contrast scene.
