I do not own the camera, yet. But I played with it in the store today and I would say that it is not easy to operate 'in auto mode'.

I would suggest one of the better Coolpix - a 4500 or if you really feel like spending money the 5000 or 5700 might better suit your needs.

Ultimately you should go into the camera shop and try it yourself though.
