A good starter lens is the AF 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 D IF. Good range, sharp, not that expensive. Currently at B&H its $325 less $80 rebate.

Here are the lenses compatible with D100, D1, D1H, D1X

AF-D and AF-G lenses (with or without IF)
- All functions available, not limitations

AF-I, AF-S lenses- (with internal focus motor)
- All functions available, no limitations

AF lenses
- All functions available, No 3D matrix, Spot & Center metering only

AI, AI'd, AIS (Non AF, Non CPU), and Series E Manual Focus Lenses on D100
- NO METERING, Manual use only
- These can be converted (add CPU) to allow metering, see below.

AI, AI'd, AIS (Non AF, Non CPU), and Series E Manual Focus Lenses on D1, D1H, D1X
- NO Matrix metering, Spot & Center metering OK, NO Shutter Priority, NO Program Mode, AIS: Aperture Priority OK, AI: NO Aperture Priority,

Non AI & AIS and other Manual Focus lenses (most made earlier than 1977)
- NO, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOUNT. IT WILL DAMAGE YOUR METERING TAB!
- These can be converted to AI and CPU, see below.

Nikkor IX (APS)
- NO, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOUNT. IT WILL DAMAGE YOUR METERING TAB!
- These can NOT be converted.

To Convert Non AI & AIS and other Non-CPU Manual Focus Lenses see:
