I had read an interview with the Japanese designer responsible for the D100. Sorry I can't recall his name. (I'm still not good at remembering Japanese names) who stated the D100 was based off of the F100. Common belief has been that the D100 is a digital N80, yet he commented that it is not the case. Only certain design elements from the N80 were used in the creation of the D100. He also went on to state future designs of both DSLRs and 35mm will also share common elements.
The review for design, and ergonomics for the D100 can be located on Nikon's International-Japanese website (in English) When time permits me to, I will see if I can locate the link to the interview.
