I feel your pain!

I was shocked with the mild flash underexposure when I first got my D100. I studied and experimented with things a bit and realized that there is a reason that the D100 does not give immediately usable images, in comparison to the CP-5700 and others.

Primarily, I believe it is because the D100 was created to capture an image with the highest possible dynamic range of color and exposure detail. I agree that they could have done better with the default curves for snapshooting (they are adjustable), but nevertheless the camera's images are superior to the 5700 after a little processing. The reason I say this is because the CCD is bigger and captures a larger image, plus the dynamic color range is greater (Adobe RGB vs. sRGB), which allows for greater detail, color, saturation, etc.

But, the commitment level to the D100 is much higher. YOU are the one that controls your image. You do not hand the image over to a processor. YOU process it yourself in Photoshop or an equivalent. The RAW mode of the D100 gives you an image with a multiple EV range. YOU select the range that you like for the image. YOU set the sharpness level. YOU decide that exact color balance you like.

With the 5700 and other snapshooting cameras, the camera has already made those decisions for you. With the D100 YOU make the decisions. If one is only interested in popping out a nice snapshot, then the 5700 or others are just fine. (I have them all, since my family is quite large and we all use Nikon digital. PLEASE don't tell my wife that I said she is only taking snapshots with her 5700!)

All this discussion about disappointment with the D100 comes from using it as a snapshot camera. It is simply NOT a snapshot camera. Instead it is a large commitment camera. YOU alone are the controller of your image. It is a work of your hands. The camera only provides a starting point for the final image. YOU must finish the image. The camera provides the dynamic range and CCD size to allow an INCREDIBLE image to be created. I truthfully prefer the look of the final image to comparable medium format images.

But, do not be fooled. DO NOT BUY a D100 expecting to be able to take fast snapshots. It just doesn't work that way. It is called and "enthusiast's" camera by Nikon. There is a reason for that! An enthusiast will take a lot more abuse (do more work), if he/she can get what they want from the image. When you compare this process to the old way of doing it, where you set up your view camera, put a cloth over your head, slid in the film holder, and hoped each of your $25.00 shots came out, the D100 is far superior for an enthusiast. But, with it you can get comparable quality. Have some images done by a LightJet if you do not believe me.

Come on now. Victor Newman, where are you. You shoot 300 images a second with your D100. Why do YOU keep using it? You are the ultimate in production use.

Where are all the friends of the D100 today! Stand up and explain how you feel. Let not our camera be denigrated. Let readers know the TRUTH!

I love my D100. It is the BEST camera I have ever owned, and I will NEVER go back to film because of it! I am about to sell my F5. I've already sold my RB67, and M645 medium format cameras. I'll never look back!

Like a Jet compared to a Cessna, the D100 will fly faster and higher than "consumer" cameras. I am an enthusiast. Do you feel my enthusiasm?
