When I jumped from film to digital, I started with a D70S in the spring of 2006. Upgraded to the D200 in the spring of 2007. I knew the D300 was coming, but did not want to wait.
I had every intention of skipping the D300/D300S. I got tired of waiting for the D400 so I got the FX D700 (mini D3) in Q4 2011. I knew the D800 was coming, but the "95%" specs indicated it was not the camera I wanted (mini D4). Assuming a D700 upgrade is not coming, my next camera will probably be a D5 if I can swing the budget.
The D7100 is a great camera for the technology, but I really like the semi-pro bodies of the D200/D300/D700 for the larger size and extra buttons. Upgrading from the D200 was a rather simple decision for me. If I was upgrading from a D300(S), it would require a bit more thought given the currently available bodies.
