If we stretch the analogy very far, if the D700 was split into a D600 and a D800, maybe the D300 will be split into a D7100 and some unknow entity which will be the DX equivalent of the D800?
Meanwhile, I'll keep shooting my two D200 until something better shows up - if that ever happens
