Yes, definitely get your hands on one if you can before buying. If you can take some shots and get them home to look at them on a screen, you'll have a better of the capabilities. You might consider renting one for a week,since at first touch you may not like the feel of the camera after a D300, but after a few days it might feel quite natural.

In my opinion, the 7100 is a big improvement over the 7000, and except for the body size, a good replacement for the D300.
