Lee Syl,

The former owner's battery is indeed the authentically numbered EN-EL3e so it is a bit of a mystery. I wasn't aware it would be safe to clean something like one of these batteries with isopropyl alcohol, but I'll give it a try unless some other Nikonian stops me in my tracks.
