I have the D700 and D300 plus the AIS and AFD versions of the 24mm f2.8 lens. I just tried both lenses on both bodies and here are my observations.
First the D300 and D700 are pretty much twin bodies. Except for DX vs FX performance the controls and menus are the same. The D700 has much better high ISO performance. One odd thing I see with the AIS lens on both bodies is while the green dot focusing aid is the same on both bodies, it is much less precise on the D300. It stays on too long and stays on over a wider focus distance range. Because of that I would give the nod to the AFD 24mm f2.8 lens. I believe both the AIS and AFD lenses have the same optical formula and CRC, that performance will be very similar and it'll be hard to distinguish between the two lenses.
While I like the D300 with it's same battery and grip as the D700 I'm not happy with the ISO performance and am looking to upgrade to the D7100 soon. However if you keep the D300 at or below ISO 800 the performance is extremely good.
