The non-CPU lens data is for older lenses that don't have a CPU chip. These can be recognised by having no contacts around the mount.

Entering this information into the D300s allows it to calculate colour matrix metering for exposure in manual and aperture priority modes.

It also enables some speedlights like the SB-800 to auto zoom according to the focal length set on the lens.

Another benefit is that the lens aperture is shown on the D300s's displays.
