Here's an un-cropped photo taken directly from a raw file taken with the D300 and AF 70-210mm f4 lens. I used the built in flash as the flowers were in deep shade on the north side of my house. I actually had to back off slightly from the minimum focus distance of the lens to get all of the flower in the photo. The new AFS 70-200mm f2.8 VR II lens can't focus nearly this close.
D300, ISO 800, f11, 1/250 sec in manual exposure mode.
And the same flower taken with the AFS 70-200mm f2.8 VR II at it's closest focus distance. Same setup as above. But a higher contrast and higher resolution lens.
