The maximum cable length for standard cable for a high-speed USB2.0 device is 5 meters IE your camera. Anything longer creates timing issues. Active cables overcome this issue. Depends on how long you want the cable to be. That will determine which is required. To me getting the active cable and be done with the matter would be my choice rather than finding out after I bought the first cable that I should have bought the other one.
