I agree that certain design evolutions, like the cross sensor placement, are not always desirable. Similarly, the lack of focus points on the outer margins, especially on the FX sensors. They don't even quite reach the standard rule of thirds points.
But that is a design evolution, not a feature set decision like inclusion of the AF-ON button, buffer size, etc. To me they are very different issues.
Now that you mention it, seems to me that increasing the cross sensor count would be a good future update, and something easy to put into a feature bullet list. Unlike "better auto-focus" or something like that, which many perceive as perhaps marketing hype.
