The 10 pin accessory screws in and locks the connection. This can be good or bad. It is good since a simple bump or pull will not remove the connector. Bad because a strong enough tug can topple a tripod mounted camera. It is also easy to hand wire if necessary and even has an accessory with banana plugs for direct connection to laboratory equipment of custom timers. Many may have a number of favorite accessories with a 10 pin connection and do not want to buy new accessories.
There are special time triggers that control both the shutter and flash or flashes at once with different time releases and durations.
USB and USB type connectors do go bad far more often than the Nikon 10 pin connector due to the 10 being more physically robust because of strain reliefs, number of wires and wire size.
