Ian,

Matrix and Centered weighed metering perform exactly the same with non-CPU manual focus lenses and flash. The Spot metering forcing the flash mode to Standard iTTL is right out of all of Nikon's operating manuals. I have hundreds of flash photos taken with the results as I explained. Quite simply if you use Matrix or Center weighed metering with non-CPU lenses at any distance greater than about 6 feet you will probably under expose your photo.
