Len,

My understanding is that "matrix" metering was developed under a different name of course by Canon and that basically it assumes a mid-day full Sunlight scene. It was not designed to store a database of flash scenes.

There is a Ken Rockwell document that discussed this (Canon system) but I just cannot find it.

I should really bow out now as my Voigtlander 40mm F2 is a chipped lens so I cannot verify your original findings.
