Here are two photos, both taken from the same spot 25 feet from the subject.

D300, AI 85mm f1.8 at f2.8, ISO 200. Both photos shot raw and only down sized for posting.

Matrix metering, iTTL balanced fill.

Spot metering. Flash automatically switched to Standard iTTL.

The matrix metered photo is 3 stops under exposed.

edit: I just did a controlled test with the D800 and find the flash performance with manual focus lenses is the same as the D200 and D300.
