It depends on what is important to you for the type of photography that you do.

I went from a D300s to strictly FX, then decided I still wanted a DX camera and got a D7000.

What is better about the D7000:

  • the 33% larger image, better high noise control at higher ISOs
  • native ISO at 100 and further low settings
  • wider dynamic range, resulting in fewer blown highlights


What is missing compared to the D300s:
  • 39 vs 51 focus points, less capable auto-focus system
  • only 3 shot bracketing
  • no 10 pin connector or pc connector, can't use a remote cable release when using an L-bracket in portrait orientation
  • no dedicated AF-On button
  • controls and menu options are not consistent with Nikon "pro" level bodies

    Basically, you need to determine what features you are willing to trade-off. The D7000 is not strictly a D300s upgrade.
