If "the plus and minus thing" just stopped flashing it means you've just taken exposure compensation to "0" and all should now be OK. Is it? Also, if your shots were underexposed with the indicator to the left as you say, you've got the meter directions reversed, not at default (not a big deal if you're OK with that).
