Sorry to say I don't think Nikon is going to make anything as expensive to produce as the D400 would be in DX. And the D600 is in no way a D300 replacement, in my opinion. I wouldn't be happy with the build quality. I think the D800 is considered by Nikon to be the replacement, since bird and animal enthusiasts can shoot in DX mode with it.
It looks to me like Nikon is the type of organization that doesn't care to listen to customers--they seem to have a little of the arrogant attitude that those at headquarters know better.
Maybe I'm wrong and there will be a D400, but I wouldn't bet on it.
