I use the AF-ON button now on all the time. For photos of children a single tap pre-focuses the shot so I can recompose if I need to. If the children stat running around I can instantly move to continuous focus by holding the button on. Leave the front C-S-M switch on C.

After you get used to it this becomes a very natural way to focus.

The AF-ON button doesn't activate VR lenses. You must half hold the shutter release to start the VR motors.
