"plastic bodies cluttered with 'scene' selections"
are you after a pro quality image or a pro looking camera?
I had quite forgotten that my D600 had scene modes .. Having come from a D300, they did briefly irritate me, but got over it and I had forgotten all about them. I really appreciate the locked natureof the U1and U2 modes. The D600 is an astonishing camera, as to a lesser extent is the D7000, which two of my friends have recently purchased. The IQ is staggering, and the dynamic range defies belief, despite the plastic body and scene modes.
I would use either ahead of the D300 in almost any conceivable situation.
That said, something is surely coming very soon to replace the D400 and D7000, and it is about time Nikon revealed its hand. This may well satisfy your desires regarding body style and will certainly fulfil them regarding technology. Good luck...
