You should see number of exposures and bracketing interval in the top LCD (and I believe in the viewfinder). Are you sure you're pressing the correct button, and that the button is indeed programmed as you described?

There are of course 2 buttons on that area of the camera. And the button programming changes with the custom settings bank.
