I have had 1 card fail on me in over 7 years of shooting digital and I was able to recover all of the images using image recovery software that was included with the higher end cards for a total loss of zero images and I shoot over 40k images a year.

I always format the card twice in the camera before using it for the first time then format it in the camera after downloading the images to my system.

There Extreme III Cards are older and they have increased in speed over the years from about 15 or 20MB/sec for the earliest versions to 45MB/sec. for the most recent versions. The Extreme Card are current with a write speed of 60MB/sec.
