Joe,you are starting with what is in my opinion the most difficult of bird photography situations. I would recommend starting with larger more easily approachable birds(pigeons,mallards at the park,gulls). Remove the tc and just practice until you get satisfactory results and then try the same with the tc and then progress the to very hard to catch little birds. Even birds in flight are easier to catch than the little guys in the bushes.
