P mode plus M on the Servo switch (camera body) plus M or M/A (assuming a Silent Wave equipped lens) should allow you to fire the shutter regardless of ambient light levels.

Can you verify this works in good light?
Then move to an area with lower light levels comparable to where you were having trouble. Does it still work then?
