You were very close. The service center said that the shutter mechanism repair, and a repair to one of the focus points that doesn't work (top center), and replacement of the rubber grips = $415.01, out the door.

As much as it pains me to put money into it, I just don't have the funds available to wait to get another camera. My D70 is just too slow (burst rate and VERY shallow RAW buffer) for the horse event/rodeo work that I actually make money doing. I'd love a D700 for all the other projects I have in mind, but I just can't swing it.

Thanks everyone for your help. At least I know I'll have a functioning camera that should be rated for another 150k shutter actuations.
