I have a Porsche 828, I want a new Boxer because I do not like the rear seat, I may have to keep my old car until something better comes along because I do not like Rag Tops or Farraris. Maybe a Viper if my ship comes in from the Tsunami?
If I were you, I would save up for a used D3. If less than a million shots on it, they can last longer than that. It is an evolutionary leap from the D300 It is FullFrame like your old film cameras It focuses and shoots faster. The build, handling, and controls are better.
Any new cameras since that one have only small gains by comparison. I doubt if you actually need higher resolution, ISO, or Video. If you do, save up for a D4 or D5.
