I rarely, if ever, use ADL, as it's usefulness seems somewhat limited, it introduces noise, and the manual is even ambiguous as to what it should be used for. But that's me- everyone has different taste.
With ragards to metering, after initially making the mistake that matrix metering was the best way to go. Nikon seems to have "rebranded" center weighted as a good alternative for portraits. The fact of the matter is, Nikon meters have been center weighted for years, beginning with the Nikon F Photomics. I think the F3's was the pinnacle, using 80/20. To this day, I swear it is the best meter they ever built.
