I'm not sure what you want to get, but on a tripod without any tracking your exposure has got to be limited to prevent trailing of the stars. Attached is a shot of the constellation Orion I got using a similar setup. I was using a 50mm f2 lens with a D300, all settings at manual. This shot was 5 sec at f2, focus at infinity, ISO at 2000, raw on a Gitzo tripod. Because of the light pollution I had to play around with the white balance in Captive NX to get the dark sky.
I suggest you just take a lot of shots at different exposures, say 5, 8, 12, 15 secs and see what you like. Also, if you are using a zoom, and you are pointed up, watch out for zoom creep.
