You should test your lens, before the trip, at the intended focal ratio (presumably wide open). Stars bring out the worst in lenses, especially haloing and color fringing. Some lenses do a very poor job wide open, and this is true of even very expensive fast prime lenses shooting down toward f/1.4.
You don't need terribly dark skies to do the test. Just find a dark area of the sky reasonably far away from the worst of the city lights if that is a problem where you live.
