Rick,
You will need to focus very carefully--as I'm sure you are aware, lenses of this focal length have very little depth of focus.

Also, long, heavy lenses require fast shutter speeds--any camera shake is magnified with telephoto lenses.

A heavier tripod will give you better results. The tripod needs to be on a steady, level base.

Your lens is not pedestrian. It is as good as any of the modern lenses. Build quality is better than modern AF lenses.
