Hi I've been playing around with the late 70's/early 80's version of the Nikkor 300mm AI 4.5 Serial 492856 (not the ED, not the AIS) with the tripod collar ring. Glass is in very good condition with only a minor coating mark and minimal dust.
I have set the non-cpu lens data to the right setting, and it meters fine, et al. I can't seem to get a really crisp capture when viewing the image at 100%.
I shoot on a bogen tripod and head, fire with the MC-12 remote, and tried MUP and single shot mode - MUP provide a slightly better rendition.
From a focusing perspective - do I need to change anything on the D200 (focus area mode or other) to ensure the focus icon in the viewfinder is truly ensuring that I have the picture in focus? (ie, focus dot on....)
Or is this just a pedestrian lens and not quite that sharp.....or do I need an even beefier tripod? ( i use a Bogen 3001 with the 3030 head.) I have a 3011/329 Bogen combo that is heavier....maybe that is better...??
