Thanks Bellnier, Richard, and Stephen. I agree about the fit on the D300. I tend to put the lens on and test it to see if it is all the way over. I do that during the day as well. It definitely does not lock down completely.
As I mentioned way back, it will be difficult to duplicate since I do not have a two day or full one day action shoot scheduled, in which I can test out the mechanics of the 70-200 VR1 any time soon.
I also mentioned that while on a monopod (which this last shoot was also), I heard a loud flapping noise, like a loud mirror slap, repeatedly when I had my VR on normal. I happened to be shooting at 1/500 or one click higher, so I turned off my VR. That stopped it, but not sure why it would do that in the first place. It occurs when I pressed the back (AF) button in, camera set to Continuous, which is not directly tied to the shutter at that moment.
