Hi Peter,

In addition to Victor's excellent answer above: An L-Bracket keeps the mass of the camera and lens centered on the tripod head providing more stability.
Also, if you are not familiar with the Arca-Swiss Quick Release system, L-Brackets, Camera Plates, Lens Plates, etc... when combined with an Arca-Swiss Clamp provide the capability to quickly mount your camera to a tripod head, macro focusing rails, flash brackets, etc...
