If you use a clamp on a tripod that accepts it, the L-bracket allows you to quickly switch the orientation of your camera from landscape to portrait. Often times a ball head has a notch in it that allows you to rotate the camera from landscape to portrait, but then the camera shifts to the left and down a bit. The L-bracket keeps you on approximately the same plane.
