My own thinking on 24mpx DX is that it remains to be seen if increasing sensor density "scales up indefinitely". I think, short of real world evidence, you are computing things with too much precision, assuming these things will scale up forever. We will see. And it may, but I am unwilling to assume so ahead of time. If that makes any sense.

The diffraction limit at 24 mpx DX is about 1 stop wider than 12mpx DX. If you don't like shooting f/16 on 12 mpx DX you probably won't like f/11. If you don't like f/11 on 12mpx DX then you won't like f/8 on 24 mpx DX (assuming that is why you don't or rarely bird smaller than f/7.1 or so- I've never discusser this with you before). Since I use a TC17 more than you do, this is a particular concern of mine because that TC probably ought to be shot at f/10 to f/11 when the situation allows.
In my real world, I don't go out thinking I have a specific bird I will shoot within the MFD of my 500 so I'll take the 300/2.8. My world is more chaotic. End the end, I lose far more shots (mainly BIF) because I overfilled the viewfinder (or misframed or didn't anticipate wing travel) than shots I lose because I was within the MFD.

I was not thinking about warblers when I said "sometimes DX is too close". I was thinking more on the lines of larger waders and BIF where I don't have time to take off and put on TC's as the action pans out. In particular BIF because a bird needs a LOT of space for the wings to move up and down, and framing is rarely dead accurate. And I certainly can't flip active AF sensors around between wing beats.
Of all the problems I have shooting warblers, getting too close is way down the totem pole. I actually ran into it today but it was a very atypical environment. In my neck of the woods, the big problem is that the warblers are typically at the tops of trees and there is a shortage of good habitat with 6 foot tall trees. The best place I know for warblers has them at tree top level at 50 -75 feet. I don't bird there very often because of that, but all the visual birders love it. I guess your neck of the woods is different.
