"RE: An over fertile imagination perhaps, all about the D400?"

<<A lot of people are tenaciously hanging on to their old shoes - the idea that DX and only DX is "the only way" to shoot wildlife>>

Not me, or at least not for that reason. Like many I have yet to be convinced to pay out for a D800 until I am sure that the camera will do everything I can do on a DX camera and possibly more.

<<Instead of something more like "spray and pray" at 8 fps it may mean more deliberate work (and I know how hard that is).>>

Agreed, but I don't always "spray and pray", for example when I am panning a bird, I need no more than 3-4fps so the D800 would do that in DX. Sometimes though, and especially if a bird it approaching directly towards me I need more. Do the maths, a bird approaching is moving in and out of focus so fast the only chance one would have of getting a sharp image is to use a higher fps. As the attached image demonstrates, I took around 12 images as it flew towards me and only one was in sharp focus.

I think the dash for a D800 is over now and I also feel serious photographers like those on here will be the majority buyers. The must have gadget spending spree is probably over by the pixel crazy must haves.

I shall still wait, if the D800 is still there and proves itself satisfactorily in DX I shall may consider buying it. However, I haven't money to burn, my D700 will continue to be my landscape (occasional wildlife) camera of choice and my D7000 my wildlife camera.

I shall await a new DX for my needs, if it doesn't appear I shall rethink.

Richard
