"RE: An over fertile imagination perhaps, all about the D400?"

"I think your conclusion is right... that the future of high end DX will be a short one, although I personally suspect there may be a D400."

Having admonished Wilbur and Orville, that," that thing will never fly", I'm reluctant to speculate on where marketing and technology may lead. Never the less, I see the future very differently. The astonishing gains in quality that have taken place, even on cell phone sized sensors, expands the reasonable aspirations for smaller formats. Leica hadn't contemplated the potential of CMOS technology when they first decided to use 35mm movie film in a compact still camera. Many of our formats, such as FX and DX for example, are products of history to a greater extent than they are economic and utilitarian optimizations of our emerging technological potentials. FX really does seem to be evolving into a mid sized format in terms of its capabilities. DX, and even smaller formats are increasingly surpassing performance, of older, and very expensive FX cameras. While I don't believe things will continue to improve at their current pace indefinitely, I seriously doubt that we are stretching the limimts yet.

Nikon has been making cameras for a very long time and knows a lot about their customers. The "pro lite" market should get very much bigger than it now appears, as the IQ continues to increase. There is no reason for it to ever challenge the also improving FX format for the best available images at a market limiting cost, but if tomorrow's DX IQ looks enough like yesterdays FX IQ, the very significant difference in price points and lens portability are a compelling case for an expanding market among many pro and advanced ameteur photographers. (Is there a prize for the most convoluted sentence ever?)
