Hi Richard,

I do think you suffer from an overly fertile imagination .

I think your conclusion is right... that the future of high end DX will be a short one, although I personally suspect there may be a D400.

I think it is a fact that a D400 must have 24 mpx in order to satisfy those that want more pixels. I think it is a fact that the D400 must shoot 8 fps in order to satisfy those that want that feature too (I am one of those).

It is also a fact that no Nikon camera today, even the far more expensive D4, can do both at the same time. The D4 can shoot 10 * 16 mpx per second, or 160 mpx per second. The D400 would have to shoot 8 * 24 or 192 mpx per second, which is something the D4 does not do (at a $5000 price tag), nor any other Nikon camera. The D4 was announced almost simulatenously with the D800 and is our best evidence to suggest what Nikon can do in terms of bandwidth when, effectively, price is no object.

What I'm trying to say here is that I do not see any evidence to suggest that "Nikon has let us down" because that implies Nikon can easily do it but simply chooses not to do it at the current time. That Nikon "does not care about us DX wildlife shooters".

I do see evidence that Nikon may simply not be able to put all that together to satisfy the D400 market at this moment in time. Maybe next week, or next month or next year.

I think that uncertainty is important because it questions the validity of your cynicism as to why the D400 is not on the shelf today, as well as all the other similar concerns expressed in all the various related threads sprinkled through the fora here.

You may be right- maybe Nikon can do it but chooses not to. But I don't think you or anyone else can prove that ascertion, and that goes to the core of the "mood" here in the D300 forum . The cynicism may well be unwarranted. We all may just need to be more patient to allow the two parallel required technologies to catch up and reach equilibrium - sensor density and electrical bandwidth.

I think you are right in your conclusion simply because we are very close to a point where FX and DX will have the same sensor density, at the same or very close to the same price, and the difference in body size and weight betwen FX and DX is insignificant.

If I pick up my D300 or D700 sometimes I have to turn it around to make sure which camera is in my hands... they are that close in feel and handling. In that world it does not make sense to charge the (roughly) same price for a smaller sensor when the larger sensor camera can shoot in the same (DX) cropped format and satisfy all users, those favoring DX or FX.
