I do like the idea of a D800 being able to stand-in and replace what I use the both the D700 and D7000 for currently. Very unique camera is the D800, to be able to do that in one go. I mean several months ago, if we discussed a hypothetical 36mp camera, NO ONE would ever have postulated it would have decent high ISO performance as a bonus. Pretty amazing.

The D600 doesn't wow me other than as a small light travel camera since I would rather have both ends of the extreme on FX (D800 and D4) for 60% of what I do and a D400 for the other 40%. But yes, even I can see a huge market appeal if it comes in a D5100 or D7000 level of features and mid-range between the the D4-D800 in sensor performance. It's hard to say what Nikon can do for what price, but I think the $1500 price attached to the rumour is WAY wrong, is far too low and I think would have to be $1800-$2400 in price. But what if it comes in at D3100 level of camera features in order to keep price down? (no, that doesn't make sense to me)

Anyhow, I'm still holding out for a DX D400 though for what I need, to fill out the next step in my ideal camera kit.

BTW in regards to the D3200, I saw Thom Hogan make a quick comment on NR that this is a Nikon sensor (and my assumption is not the same base sensor as on the Sony NEX-7). That would be surprising. I would like to know more in case that sensor is going into the D400. The dpreview studio samples look OOF to me so I felt I couldn't evaluate based on those. I.e. I saw less D3200 noise than NEX-7, but less detail, but I felt out of focus could be a big determinant in what I was seeing. Seems like their studio samples are quite sloppy in this regard on more than one Nikon camera.

Best regards, SteveK
