At the risk of dragging this thread out longer than I ought to, I want to report that I am really enjoying the new camera. While it is different, it is in the best possible way. It feels good in the hand (an intangible benefit I know, but still important), and the controls seem pretty straightforward.
Having a knob for most common functions is fantastic. If anything, learning the D300s has made me re-learn some things on my D70. I haven't been shooting a lot, but I've made at least a few images I really like. We've had some crazy weather this spring and it makes for some interesting weather-related pictures.
If you are on the fence about upgrading, I'll offer that my experience has been positive. Coming from the D70, the D300s gives you more information and control. It is more sophisticated, but it's not intimidating. Everything has a purpose and every aspect is much improved over the platform I'm coming from. That said, I am keeping my D70 and intend to keep using it. Particularly to teach my daughter.
