For years I shot only JPEG. I was happy with JPEG and probabaly a bit afraid of NEF.
I started shooting NEF and JPEG about a year ago, after getting the D300. At the time I regarded RAW as a back up to rescue images, as I found it difficult to process. I was ending up with too many files and getting confused. And I never did much with the NEFs and stayed in the comfort zone of my JPEGs.
But it is just about easy to PP a NEF as it is to PP a JPEG, now that Picasa supports NEF so well. And I am using and learning NX2. This workflow seems to work for me. I would probably use Lightroom if it could link to my Picasa site but for basic edits Picasa is fine.
It is reasonably easy to edit a NEF in NX2 - I love the way you can modify the D300 camera settings (picture mode, WB, active D-lighting etc) at one click. It is amazing how much more detail ytou get to keep in highlights - even using Picasa as an editor. NX2 Curves and Control Points are foxing me a bit but I will get there. I just wish Jason Odell's (brilliant) e-book was a real book!
In the last week - after this thread - I have finally crossed the rubicon, and now shoot NEF only, unless I know I will share images without access to my main PC, when I add a JPEG. It is great not seeing two of everything!
In any event you lose so much with a JPEG - dynamic range and resolution and flexibility of picture settings and WB. It is like buying cheap film from Underwoods or Fotopost Express to put in your beautiful new F3.
Thus converted I have already persuaded one of my fellow Bogor Nikonians to shoot NEF.
