Yours was the answer I was dreading. And yes I have problems with skin rendition too!
Anyway this is fairly unscientific but here goes - we have a few shots with both bodies with similar settings - all normal JPEGs, base ISO and f/4.5. You can probably guess that the last two are from the d200 - the first two were the best looking of 5 images from the D300 - I rejected Neutral and the downloaded Portrait setting, and also a personal custom setting.
In order they are:
D300 D2x I D300 Standard D200 Custom - the one I like best D200 Normal
As I write this I am looking up to take in a very similar view of the garden. I have to tell you that the D200 colours closely match what my eyes see - both settings. The D300 colours look a parody. I don't much like the D300 result.
I hear all the information about NX2 and NEFs but surely the D300 is a class leading camera - but 99% of what I take I like to delete the NEF if the JPEG is good. It must be possible to get nice looking JPEGs somehow?!
