Perhaps. That's what my experience indicates. I do not see where they would necessarily have to re-tool, just change the plastic used.
From a pure capitalistic point of view, one would not over manufacture spares to such extreme. There is also the concept of opportunity cost, in this case the loss of customer confidence and therefore customers. That's far more expensive than the few hundred dollars it would cost to overrun a slew of these clips.
OTOH, the reason I am curious is because someone here said their replacements were of a different material, and I don't have any real reason not to believe that. Though it certainly could be false, so I would like to hear from others.
