I've had my D4 for nearly a year now, but never really paid attention to the battery usage. I have 2 batteries and rotate them and recharge the used one before a shoot.
Yesterday I was photographing a bicycle race. I took 2605 shots and used 33% of the battery capacity. That extrapolates to almost 7900 shots on one charge! I'm amazed.
I was shooting with a Sigma 120-300/2.8, OS (Sigma's acronym for VR} off, CH mode mostly in bursts of about 10 shots, and very little chimping. I use AF-ON only with d9 or d21 and would track a rider from before the beginning of a burst until after the last image of the burst. Certainly a battery efficient mode of operation, but I'm still surprised at the low power consumption.
