Expose to the right for less noise!

If it's helpful, here's a shot with a D4 in baseball at ISO 4000, 1/800th second.



Here's that same image in a 1:1 crop:

Look at his glove and the lettering -- sharp and almost noise free. Look at his face -- pretty noisy, as is the background.

The less the exposure originally (and the more you pull it up with shadow enhancement) the more noise you will see.

And as mentioned, getting in close means the subject is larger compared to the noise "grain", small crops are bad for high noise obviously.

I can't see the original image you posted, but how does the amount of noise viewed 1:1 compare with this?

PS. That's with a "30" noise reduction in lightroom, which is rather mild.
