You don't need a completely charged battery (the upload process takes only a few minutes), but if it makes you feel better to have one, go for it.
Download the firmware onto your Mac desktop. (or you can download directly onto the card through the reader plugged into your Mac)
Copy that firmware from the desktop onto whatever card fits in the D4 slot you have chosen to be Primary -- at the base level (not in a folder).
Insert that card into the Primary slot. Press the MENU button on the the back of the D4; choose the "Setup" menu, then "Save/Load settings", then "Load Settings." The D4 will go looking in your primary drive.
It'll take a few minutes to load the new firmware. Flashing green light. When the light goes out, eject the card onto which you've loaded the new firmware, and replace it with the card onto which you want to save your pics.
If you're a compulsive type like me, Menu/Setup/Firmware Version will confirm you now have the current firmware installed on your D4.
